{{{DAY 4:}}} Fashion Week at Camp {{{House of J.K. Rock}}} #NovelFashionWeek

Welcome to Day 4 of Novel Fashion Week!  This hour's designer is the duo known as House of J.K. Rock presenting her Collection: Fashion Week at Camp,  by way of Berlin!

The Collection:
Fashion Week at Camp
It sounds like an oxymoron… fashion at camp. But while writing Camp Boyfriend, we came away totally inspired because these girls found a way to bring their style to camp with them. Long hikes, tipped canoes, and the occasional run-in with skunks couldn’t keep them from looking good. Most of the time.

Heroine Lauren is Reformed Geek turned Popular Girl:

She’s just launched a whole new style chapter in her life, gladly learning how to put clothes together in a way that makes her feel her best. But you can bet she still keeps a few vintage Batman tees somewhere in her suitcase. She needs sleep shirts, after all, and something to wear while reading Tarot cards at midnight with the girls in her cabin, Munchies Manor:Lauren is Reformed Geek turned Popular Girl
“A Batman shirt and ponytail? Seriously?” My frenemy Jessica greeted me when I arrived at the beach that night. “I thought you were kidding at school with that lame outfit. But hello? This is a party, not Comic-Con.”The small patch of sand near Turtle Creek was already full of kids ready to cool off in the 90- degree heat. I’d arrived a few minutes after seven-thirty and there were at least twenty people throwing Frisbees or riding the rope swing out over the water. A few of the boys dragged down coolers with sodas on top and beers hidden underneath while girls compared bikini tops.I gave her a fake smile that masked the panic attack building about tonight. Taking a deep breath, I told myself not to let her get to me. “What’s up, Jess? Didn’t know you knew about Comic-Con. You must make a perfect Poison Ivy.” I’d survived the cliques of Jefferson Davis High this long and wouldn’t let a witch with French tips bring me down now.

Lauren’s BFF, Alex.

Alex is a good girl at home who seriously let’s her hair down at camp. Her parents are super strict about hair and makeup, and they write a blog about parenting that often puts Alex in the spotlight. She reins in her wild side at home, but at camp, she loves to alter her clothes in the Arts and Crafts building to upgrade her style. Her tees get bedazzled. Her shorts get shorter. Alex loves camp and doesn’t mind taking serious style risks every summer:

Alex

“So where’s your medal, Miss National Scholastic Decathlon Winner?” Alex nudged Siobhan.Siobhan kicked an apple core at Alex’s foot. “If I’d brought it, you’d probably take it to Arts and Crafts and make it a head piece.”“Or a belt buckle.” Jackie dragged a twig behind her in the dirt, her tall, willowy grace obvious even in warm-up shorts and an oversized tee. “Remember when she went through that cowboy phase after watching True Country?”“Who could forget the summer of a thousand ten gallon hats?” groaned Siobhan. “She wouldn’t even take them off during swim.”

Counselor Emily is an Eighties Chick:

Counselor Emily is an Eighties Chick

My foot barely grazed the first porch step of my cabin before a willowy blonde in her late 20s sprang from the door. Light backlit her long messy curls held back with an enormous, glittering clip that could have doubled as a disco ball.“What’s up, home girl!” I caught a flash of rainbow- striped leg warmers as she sped down the stairs. Before I could move, a tight hug lifted me off the ground.I was speechless in the face of such enthusiasm.“I’m Emily, your new counselor.” The blonde pulled back slightly, her nose nearly touching mine. “And you must be Lauren. I mean, you have to be since you’re like the last person here and everything.”Suddenly I remembered my previous counselor’s trip to Ireland this summer for a step-dancing competition. Emily must have taken her place.  I didn’t know what to make of our new counselor. Between the leg warmers, hair clip and an oversized neon Swatch watch, she looked like she’d crawled out of an ‘80’s time capsule. And she was touchy-feely times ten. She grabbed one of my bags and started back up the stairs.

The Novels Highlighted:
Camp Boyfriend (Camp Boyfriend #1)
by J.K. Rock
The summer of her dreams is about to get a reality check!
They said it couldn't be done, but geeky sophomore Lauren Carlson transformed herself into a popular girl after moving to a new school half-way across the country. Amazing what losing your braces and going out for cheerleading will do. Only trouble is, the popular crowd is wearing on Lauren's nerves and she can't wait to return to summer camp where she's valued for her brain instead of her handsprings. She misses her old friends and most of all, her long time camp-only boyfriend, Seth. This year she intends to upgrade their relationship to year-round status once she's broken up with her new, jock boyfriend, Matt. He doesn't begin to know the real her, a girl fascinated by the night sky who dreams of discovering new planets and galaxies.
But Matt isn't giving her up without a fight. As he makes his case to stay together, Lauren begins to realize his feelings run deeper than she ever would have guessed. What if the guy she thought she was meant to be with forever isn't really The One? Returning to Camp Juniper Point was supposed to ground her uprooted life, but she's more adrift than ever. Everything feels different and soon Lauren's friends are turning on her and both guys question what she really wants. As summer tensions escalate, Lauren wonders if she's changed more than she thought. Will her first big discovery be herself?
"Fun, romantic and giddy, Camp Boyfriend brings real romance to summer camp with grace, humor and passion." - Carrie Jones, New York Times Best-selling Author of the NEED series

    1. Hi Amanda! Isn't the bag cute? I saw it at the American Library Association conference and scooped it right up. If only Karen had been with me, we could have escaped with two . We had so much fun there and at BEA this year, seeing all the great free offerings from publishers. If you're a book lover and those conferences come to your town... you must go!!

We spent months crossing out fingers before the book came out (would readers see what we see? will they love these people like we do? ) but it seems like we're getting some really nice feedback on the story. 1. Hi Mindy!! We had a fun visit at ALA didn't we?! We are sooo thrilled to think we converted a non-reader long enough to read our stories!! If we accomplished nothing else with this book, that alone would make us feel like a huge success. But then, as hard core readers, we all know how much joy it gives us. Of course we want to be able to open that world of books to other people! Thank you for sharing this with us. And we can't wait to let your daughter's BFF know about Camp Christmas- the next novella due out in late November!!
