When fifteen-year-old Jacob Lau is pulled from the crumpled remains of his mother's car, no one can explain why he was driving or why the police can't find his mother's body. Made a ward of his uncle and thousands of miles from home, a beautiful and mysterious neighbor, Dr. Abigail Silva, offers to use her unique abilities to help him find his mom. In exchange, she requires Jacob to train as a Soulkeeper, a gifted warrior charged with protecting human souls. He agrees to her demands, desperate for any clue to the mystery of his mother's disappearance. But soon Jacob finds himself trapped in a web of half-truths, and questions Dr. Silva's motives for helping him.

Jacob has lost his father (Charlie) to the war & now his mother Lily has disappeared. Jacob is sent to live with his Uncle John (Charlie's brother) while they still try to find Lily. Jacob meets Malini & they become best friends. Malini is of Indian decent & Jacob is half Chinese. With these differences being in Paris is difficult. The people of Paris are very prejudice about anything & anyone different. Jacob also meets Dr. Silva which is the start of a new understanding of the world.

Through this journey you see Malini & Jacob's relationship reach a different level of understanding & love for one another. You see Jacob's insecurities with Dr. Silva. You also see Jacob become who he always was a Soulkeeper.

This book was very interesting concept. I liked the story & the characters. I feel that for myself not being from a religious background I was not able to follow everything that was going on in the story. There is a lot of talk of the stories in the bible & what happened between God & Lucifer as well as the Fallen Angels/Watchers. I think that someone who is more educated in the Bible & religion would enjoy & follow this story with no problems. I will be reading the next book in the series.  I did fall for Jacob.
