Gabriel Merrick plays with fire. Literally. Sometimes he can even control it. And sometimes he can't. Gabriel has always had his brothers to rely on, especially his twin, Nick. But when an arsonist starts wreaking havoc on their town, all the signs point to Gabriel. Only he's not doing it. And no one seems to believe him. Except a shy sophomore named Layne, a brainiac who dresses in turtlenecks and jeans and keeps him totally off balance. Because Layne has a few secrets of her own...
Book #2 in Elemental series
Still focuses on the 4 brothers but this is mostly Gabriel's story.
Gabriel is a fire elemental and he is still trying to get his power under control. I could feel that Gabriel is feeling lost and alone. Nothing in his life is working out and he is having a major attitude with everyone. Nick (his twin brother) is hanging out more with a girl (Quinn) who happens to be Becca's best friend. This puts Nick with Chris more since Chris and Becca are dating, which leaves Gabriel out of the loop.
Feeling alone Gabriel grabs onto Hunter who has a lot of the same feelings going on. Hunter is filling a lot of the void that Nick normally would with just hanging out, playing XBOX and chilling. But Hunter understands the elements and the pulls that they have. Hunter tries to help Gabriel with his control and with the call of fire that pulls Gabriel into danger.
Gabriel is in trouble at school because math is something he has never been able to comprehend. When there is a substitute teacher who gives pop quizzes and calls you to the board to solve an equation without prior warning Gabriel is in real trouble. Nick has been taking his tests, doing his homework and passes math for him since 8th grade. Gabriel is completely lost and has no idea what to do. He must pass in order to stay on the basketball team.
In class Gabriel meets Layne. Layne sees him struggling with the pop quiz and tries to help him out but Gabriel is a complete ass to her. Gabriel has no idea why Layne would try to help him and the fact that after he was mean to her she was still willing to help him makes him even more intrigued by Layne.
Layne introduces Gabriel to her brother Simon who is in AWE of the basketball God standing before him. Gabriel and Layne become close but a string of fires in the area has everyone on edge and puts Layne and others in danger. Gabriel is accused of arson and he has no idea how to get himself out of this sticky situation. To top it off, Gabriel is fighting with Nick, Chris, Micheal & Layne's father even wants a piece of him.
In the end the arsonist will become known and a lot of issues with the brothers and Layne will be resolved. But it does lead into book #3 so be prepared to jump right into the next one.
